GP education and training for stepped care
All GPs begin mental health training by completing GPMHSC-accredited MHST Level 1, which gives them the skills and knowledge to:
- assess, triage and refer consumers with mental illness
- prepare Mental Health Treatment Plans (MHTPs).
After completing MHST Level 1, GPs can:
- recognise and assess mental illness
- prepare and review evidence-based MHTPs
- monitor consumers’ progress
- understand consumer and carer perspectives.
MBS items
After being accredited with Medicare, GPs can claim MBS items 2715 and 2717.
FPS ST gives GPs the skills and knowledge to provide treatment for mild mental illness and at-risk groups. GPs must complete MHST Level 1 before beginning FPS Skills Training.
After completing FPS ST, GPs can:
- deliver evidence-based FPS under an MHTP
- incorporate consumer and carer perspectives
- use local services to support safety and holistic care
- use relevant mental health MBS items
- engage in supervision and ongoing professional development.
MBS items
After completing FPS ST, GPs apply to the GPMHSC to register with Medicare as an FPS provider. After registration, they can claim item numbers 2725 and 2727.
