How do I become a registered provider of FPS?

GPs must:

  1. Complete an accredited MHST course.
  2. Complete an accredited FPS ST course.
  3. Complete application to register as a GP provider of FPS with Medicare Australia and attach certificate of completion to gpmhsc@racgp.org.au.

The GPMHSC will forward your application to Medicare Australia.

Medicare will mail you a letter within 4–6 weeks, confirming your eligibility as a FPS provider and access to MBS items 2721–2727 (or non-VR equivalent; 283–287).

For more information on this process, review the 'becoming an accredited MHST provider – a step-by-step process' guide.

Please note: you cannot claim against these item numbers until you receive this letter.

How to maintain your registration as an FPS provider each triennium

**Please note: FPS CPD requirements have not changed. The requirement continues to be 1 x 6 hour FPS CPD activity each triennium.**

To maintain registration with Medicare Australia as a FPS provider, GPs are required to complete a total of six hours of FPS CPD every triennium (beginning after the first triennium in which FPS ST was initially completed). This can be made up of shorter activities, but must total six hours. This will ensure you will be able to continue use of MBS items that relate to the provision of FPS (2721–2717 (or non-VR equivalent; 283–287).

Accredited FPS CPD courses can be found using these instructions on the RACGP MyCPD dashboard. Enrolling in an accredited course means the training provider will upload your certificate on your behalf, and you will automatically be marked as compliant for the triennium.

Alternatively, GPs can find and complete a non-accredited course and contact the GPMHSC to approve the course for FPS CPD.

To be approved by the GPMHSC for FPS CPD, a course must:

  1. Provide education on the Better Access recognised FPS interventions
  2. Improve your ability to provide FPS in the context of general practice

To have a completed course approved, please follow the steps below:

  1. Self report your activity via the RACGP MyCPD dashboard (instructions downloadable below)
  2. Ensure you select 'FPS CPD' under the specific requirement option
  3. Attach evidence that your course meets the above needs either in a word document, course program, etc.
  4. If you are not a member of the RACGP or ACRRM, please email the information directly to the GPMHSC: gpmhsc@racgp.org.au.
