The below outlines a step-by-step process for GPs interested in becoming accredited Mental Health providers and claiming the MBS MHST item numbers 2712 – 2717 (or equivalent non-VR GP numbers). It includes a checklist at the bottom of the page to make sure you have done everything required from your end.

Step 1

Find an accredited MHST course that suits your needs using these instructions

TIP:

If you choose to complete the MHST Modular Pathway, you will need to complete both the Core Module and the Clinical Enhancement Module

Step 2

Once you have found an appropriate course, contact the training provider and enrol into your selected course

TIP:

Ensure you give your training provider your RACGP or ACRRM ID when you enrol. This is necessary for your training provider to upload your certificates into the relevant colleges system

Step 3

For RACGP members, upload the first 6 digits of your provider number into the RACGP database using these instructions.

ACRRM members will need to contact the ACRRM PDP for this step.

The GPMHSC cannot report your MHST to Services Australia (Medicare) without this information.

Step 4

Once you have completed your course/s, your training provider will upload completion of your MHST to either your RACGP or ACRRM account. This process can take up to 4 weeks. The course should appear on your CPD or PDP statement. If your MHST is not showing, please contact the training provider and check with your relevant College.

Step 5

Once the certificates are uploaded, the GPMHSC will automatically report your MHST training completion to Services Australia (Medicare).

Step 6

Once the GPMHSC has reported MHST to Services Australia (Medicare), Services Australia (Medicare) will process your training and dispatch a letter of eligibility to your registered address.

TIP:

When you finish your MHST training, contact Services Australia on 132 150 and make sure they have the most accurate mailing address for you. This must be a street address, and not an email.

Step 7

Services Australia (Medicare) administration process can take between 4–6 weeks. Sit tight and wait to receive your letter of eligibility!

Step 8

Your letter of eligibility will contain the date by which you can claim the higher MHST item numbers. Please do not claim the higher item numbers if you have not received a letter of eligibility from Services Australia (Medicare)

Step 9

If after 6 weeks you have not received your letter of eligibility, contact the GPMHSC at gpmhsc@racgp.org.au or 03 8699 0556

Step 10

If you have received your letter of eligibility from Services Australia (Medicare) but your claims are still being rejected, please contact Services Australia (Medicare) directly on 132 150 to assess what the issue could be.
