The importance of the consumer and carer perspective

A key requirement of GPMHSC-accredited MHST and FPS ST activities is the engagement of both a consumer and carer representative in all stages of the planning, development, delivery and review of education for the opportunity to share their journeys through the health system and in recovery.

A consumer and carer representative should also be available and present, so that GPs are given the opportunity to ask questions about their experiences relating to diagnosis, the impact of their mental illness and the role of the GP in care coordination. Training providers must ensure this mandatory requirement is met and that plans are made if a representative is unable to attend on the day.

Training providers are recommended to contact organisations such as Mental Health Australia (MHA) who have a national register of mental health consumer and carer representatives.
