Focussed Psychological Strategies CPD Training
Objectives
FPS CPD extends the skills in the provision of Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS), developed from evidence-based psychological interventions.FPS CPD courses must build on the skills acquired through FPS ST.
To maintain registration with Medicare Australia as a FPS provider, GPs are required to complete at least one FPS CPD course every triennium (beginning after the first triennium in which FPS ST was completed). This will ensure continued use of MBS items that relate to the provision of FPS (2721–2717; or non-VR equivalent 283–287).
Requirements
FPS CPD activities must educated GPs on FPS interventions approved by Medicare for use under the Better Access Initiative, such as:
- psycho-education
- cognitive-behavioural therapy that involves cognitive or behavioural interventions
- relaxation strategies
- skills training
- interpersonal therapy
- eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing; and
- narrative therapy (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)
FPS CPD activities may be comprised of the following:
- Course/workshop/seminars
- e-Learning modules
- Peer group learning
- Supervised clinical attachments.
- Planning
- Development
- Delivery
- Review
The GPMHSC adjudicates the content of all mental health continuing professional development (CPD) activities, independently of RACGP CPD and/or ACRRM PDP requirements. This ensures that all education and training for GPs in mental health meet the standards set by the GPMHSC.
Accreditation process
Please note: Training providers are not rquired to complete the FPS ST application for GPMHSC accreditation.
RACGP accredited courses
- Training providers are required to mark FPS CPD under the Specific requirement eligibility section of the activity notification form.
- The RACGP CPD state faculty program coordinator will flag the request for FPS CPD accreditation to the GPMHSC.
- The GPMHSC will review the content of the activity and then notify the training provider of the outcome within 2–4 business days upon receipt.
ACRRM accredited courses
Training providers are required to send a written outline of activity content to the GPMHSC, explaining how it relates to FPS and general practice. The GPMHSC will review the content of the activity and then notify the training provider of the outcome within 2–4 business days upon receipt.
Outcomes
Training provider can use GPMHSC approved logo on advertising and marketing materials.
