Benefits for GPs and the wider community
The delivery of FPS by a GP enables members of the community to receive psychological interventions where shortages or lack of access to psychologists and psychiatrists exist, particularly in rural and remote settings.
GPs who are registered providers of FPS deliver many benefits for patients and communities, including:
- Patients can receive cost-effective psychological interventions
- FPS can be effective form of treatment for people with depression and anxiety
- GPs can provide psychological therapies if there is a shortage or lack of access of psychologists or psychiatrists (particularly important in rural and remote communities)
In addition, by registering with Medicare, the GPMHSC can maintain an account of the number of GPs accredited to deliver FPS. This important data is vital for the GPMHSC’s role in contributing to the development of policy for general practice and mental health.
